Sedation

Relaxing Dental Care at Magnolia DentalAt Magnolia Dental

We understand that visiting the dentist can be stressful for some patients. That’s why we offer many options for patients with dental anxiety, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), a relaxing atmosphere with pillows, blankets, and noise-canceling headphones connected to TVs in each room with YouTube, Netflix, and more. In case this is not enough, we also offer oral sedation, where we book an appointment and administer sedative pills under the tongue.
The patient then enters a deep, relaxed sleep, allowing us to complete the necessary procedures comfortably. The patient will remain asleep for the entire duration and will not remember anything about the procedure. This method is very safe—patients breathe independently without needing tubes in the throat. We also offer IV sedation, which is available for certain cases, but it is a more complex and higher-cost procedure.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation involves taking prescribed sedative pills before your appointment. This medication helps you feel deeply relaxed while remaining minimally responsive. Unlike general anesthesia, which puts you into a deeper, unconscious state, oral sedation allows you to stay in a tranquil, sleep-like state, making your dental experience much more pleasant. For certain patients, we administer the pills under the tongue for faster absorption and effectiveness. This method is very safe, and patients continue to breathe independently without needing tubes in the throat. In most cases, patients enter a deep sleep-like state and have little to no memory of the procedure. This makes oral sedation an excellent option for full mouth reconstructions and for patients with severe dental anxiety.

Business Hours

What to Expect

Before your appointment, you will take a prescribed sedative to help you feel at ease.
You will feel relaxed and may experience mild drowsiness, but you will still be able to respond to verbal cues.
You will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment, as the sedative effects may last for the remainder of the day.
Many patients have very little to no memory of the procedure, making it ideal for those with dental anxiety.
It is recommended that someone stay with you for a few hours after your procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.

How the Procedure Works

1. Initial Consultation

We will review your medical history and discuss your concerns to determine if oral sedation is right for you.

2. Pre-Appointment Instructions

If approved, we will provide detailed guidelines, including when to take your medication before your visit.

3. Relaxing Dental Treatment

Once the sedation takes effect, we will proceed with your treatment while ensuring you remain comfortable and stress-free.

4. Recovery & Aftercare

You may feel groggy after your visit, so rest is recommended for the remainder of the day.
