Why Are Dental Exams & X-Rays Important?
Dental exams provide a comprehensive assessment of your oral health, allowing your dentist to:
✔ Identify cavities before they cause pain or complications.
✔ Assess your risk for gum disease and other oral conditions.
✔ Detect early signs of more serious concerns, such as oral cancer.
✔ Evaluate the health of hard-to-see areas, including the back of your mouth and beneath the gums.
X-rays enhance this evaluation by revealing hidden decay, infections, bone loss, and other issues that may not be visible during a routine visual exam.
When Should You Schedule an Exam?
If it has been more than six months since your last dental check-up, now is the time to book an appointment. You should also visit a dentist immediately if you:
- Experience persistent tooth pain or sensitivity.
- Have noticed a chipped, cracked, or loose tooth.
Are switching to a new dentist and need a comprehensive evaluation.
What to Expect During Your Exam & X-Rays
A dental exam is a simple and painless process that typically follows these steps:
1️⃣ X-Rays (If Needed): If it’s time for an updated set of X-rays, we will begin by taking digital images of your teeth. You will be asked to bite down on a small tab while the machine captures detailed scans.
2️⃣ X-Ray Review: Your dentist will carefully examine the images to check for cavities, bone loss, or other hidden dental concerns.
3️⃣ Visual Examination: The dentist will assess the health of your teeth, gums, jaw, and surrounding structures, looking for signs of decay, gum disease, or abnormalities.
4️⃣ Bite Alignment Check: You may be asked to bite down to evaluate your teeth’s positioning and alignment.
5️⃣ Treatment Discussion: If any concerns are detected, your dentist will explain the findings and discuss recommended treatments or preventive care steps.
6️⃣ Next Steps: After your exam, we will help you schedule any necessary follow-up treatments and your next routine visit.
